In 2012, Mackay Regional Council introduced an Erosion and Sediment Control Compliance Program (ESCCP), targeting projects in the construction phase of development. Land development and building jobs have been identified as a major contributor of sediment and other pollutants to the region’s waterways.

Group told about the erosion and sediment control compliance program in Mackay

Explaining the Erosion and Sediment Control Compliance Program

The ESCCP consists of three phases:

  1. Education
  2. Encouragement
  3. Enforcement

Council is now in the enforcement phase. Inspections are continual and ongoing.

The ESCCP aims to ensure that construction sites achieve best practice in erosion and sediment control, which will ultimately result in the improved health of downstream waterways and the Great Barrier Reef.
