Water quality monitoring of the Mackay urban area has been limited and no substantial water quality monitoring currently exists. Recognising the heightened risks and additional costs associated with such a reality, in June 2015 Reef Catchments Limited, Mackay Regional Council and North Queensland Bulk Ports Corporation commissioned Catchment Solutions to complete the Mackay Urban Water Quality Monitoring Program. Designed as a pilot study, the broad aim was to collect baseline data during a two-year period and contribute to an improved understanding of the relationship between the Mackay urban environment and water quality in the region. Eighteen sites were included in the program, encompassing four land-use and management categories (General Catchment, Urban Land Use, Urban ABCD and Water Sensitive Urban Design).
