Mackay Regional Council organised another successful Great Northern Clean Up event in 2017. The event was facilitated by Pioneer Catchment Landcare (PCL) and was held at the Sams Road end of Riverside Drive. The river bank there is often littered with rubbish and has in the past been subject to illegal dumping. PCL volunteers, St Patricks High School students, Councillor Laurence Bonaventura and community members all came together to collect rubbish for two hours on Saturday, September 2nd. The skip was filled by the end, with food, plastic and industrial waste. This event is always well attended and it is an important landcare activity that helps keep our region beautiful!
In 2016 there were 73 registered sites in Queensland for this event which removed 160 tonnes of rubbish from the environment.
