Reef Catchments Regional Landcare Facilitator, Julianne Kasiske, has been working with a landholder in Sarina and the Sarina Landcare Catchment Management Association Inc to trial the production of dung beetles. The trial is looking at which dung beetle species is best suited to the regions conditions with a view to producing a commercial supply for local farmers to improve soil health. The trial also aims to provide a new sustainable income stream for the landholder.
There are numerous benefits of having dung beetles including a reduction in reliance on chemical fertilisers, a reduction in soil compaction, an increase in earthworms, creation of more pastures and helping to control intestinal parasites.
