In 2015/16 the National Landcare Programme project supported revegetation works at Far Beach.
PCL Project Officer Laura Whitbread worked with Mackay Regional Council for approval of a revegetation plan for 500 plants. This revegetation zone will act as a buffer between the terrestrial environment and any storm tides or strong winds. PCL volunteers came out to site and assisted in tree planting.
On Tuesday, May 2nd 2017 eight PCL volunteers met at Far Beach to transplant 145 coastal groundcovers including: Spinifex longifolius, Vigna marina, Ipomoea pes-caprae, and Vitex rotundifolia. 125 of these were densely planted at the southern end of the site to fill exposed sand after removing large infestations of Seaforth Burr (Cenchrus echinatus). The remaining 20 tiles were placed in exposed areas within the previous revegetation site closer to Petrie Street. A total of 21.5 volunteer hours were recorded for the morning. Volunteers have contributed over 90 hours throughout the duration of Far Beach Restoration Project.
Weed control and site management is ongoing.
